Poker’s risks are sneakier because skill is real
Poker is genuinely a game of skill, and that is exactly what makes its problems harder to see. A roulette player on a losing streak knows it is luck. A poker player on a losing streak has a story about variance, and sometimes the story is even true.
The poker-specific traps
Watch for three. First, the variance excuse: months of losses explained as bad luck without honest tracking is not analysis, it is denial with a spreadsheet-shaped hole in it. Track your results; the numbers are the only opinion that counts. Second, moving up to chase: taking shots at higher stakes to win back losses inverts every bankroll rule ever written. Third, the open-ended session: poker has no natural end, and tired players tilt. Decide your stop time before you sit, especially heads-up, where every hand is contested and tilt compounds fastest.
The basics, always
Your bankroll is entertainment money, fully separate from living money, and its worst day should change nothing about your month. Use the rooms’ own tools: deposit limits, session reminders, and self-exclusion, which every licensed room provides. Never play with borrowed money. Never let poker be your plan for paying a bill.
