Heads-up · the purest duel
Where you can still play heads-up poker online in 2026
Heads-up used to be a fixture of every lobby. Then the economics turned against it, the pros ate the tourists, and the rooms quietly folded the format away. It is not dead; you just have to know where it lives now.
Updated August 2026. Lobbies change; treat this as the map, and the room’s own lobby as the territory.
Why heads-up disappeared
Two-player poker has a structural problem: it is the most skill-expressive format in the game, which means the strongest players win fastest, which means casual players stop sitting. Rooms watched their HU cash tables become professionals waiting for each other in silence (the famous “lobby standoff”), earning no rake and scaring the customers. So through the 2010s and 2020s, one lobby at a time, dedicated heads-up games were cut back or removed. What survives falls into four buckets.
1. Heads-up sit and gos
The most reliable survivor. A HU SNG puts you and one opponent in a winner-takes-most bracket for a fixed buy-in, which solves the room’s standoff problem: the game starts when two people register, and ends. US-facing rooms on the Winning Poker Network (Americas Cardroom and its skins) have kept HU SNGs running continuously, and larger international rooms list HU SNG brackets at low and mid buy-ins with varying fill speed. Fill speed is the honest caveat everywhere: off-peak, you may wait.
2. Private tables and home games
The loophole nobody markets: several big rooms let you create a private game and set it to two seats. PokerStars’ Home Games are the polished version: a free private club, your own HU cash table or SNG series, stakes you choose, and the software does the dealing. If your regular opponent is a friend, a colleague, or that one person from your old league who still owes you a rematch, this is the cleanest heads-up poker available online, and it never has a fill-speed problem.
3. The nearest living relatives
When true HU is thin, two formats scratch most of the itch. Three-player jackpot SNGs (Spin & Go on PokerStars, similar lottery formats elsewhere) play heads-up the moment one player busts, which is most of the game’s minutes. And short-handed fast-fold pools at low stakes play far closer to HU ranges than a full ring ever will. Neither is the real thing; both keep your duel muscles alive between real matches.
4. The challenge match, revived
The televised heads-up duel came back into fashion: PokerGO’s High Stakes Duel series made 1v1 poker prime-time again, and 2025’s heavily promoted exhibition matches kept it in the news. For amateurs the equivalent is simply arranging a match: agree stakes, pick a room with private tables, play. Half the pleasure of heads-up has always been that it is personal.
The rules that change when it’s two of you
Heads-up flips the mechanics that full-ring players run on autopilot, and the questions land in every search box: the dealer posts the small blind, not the big; the dealer acts first before the flop and last after it; and the blinds pass back and forth every single hand, which is why HU feels twice as fast and swings twice as hard. If that paragraph surprised you, play your first matches cheap: position whiplash costs real money for a session or two. The full breakdown, with a worked hand and the why behind the blind flip, is in our heads-up rules guide.
Bankroll honesty for the duellist
Heads-up variance is the steepest in poker: every hand is contested, every session is a coinflip narrative, and there is no folding your way through a bad hour. The standard advice is a deeper bankroll than the same stakes would need at a full table, and we would add the Dual Poker rule: never book a rematch to chase the last one. That is not strategy, that is tilt with a calendar.
Choosing where to hold your duel? The rooms differ on traffic, trust and payouts far more than on their heads-up lobbies. Our head-to-head duels score exactly that, room against room.
